Hugh MacIntyre Urquhart fonds. [1914-1950].

The fonds consists of the notes for Colonel Urquhart's history of the 16th Battalion, his personal diaries from 1914 to 1918, correspondence pertaining to his military career, annotated newspaper clippings, various speeches, and a program for a Canadian Expeditionary Forces' Re-union Dinner.

Born on 13 August 1880 in Ross-shire, Scotland, Hugh MacIntyre Urquhart first mobilized in 1914 with the 79th Bn. Camerons (Winnipeg) as a Lieutenant. That year he was transferred to the 16th Battalion, (The Canadian Scottish) of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In 1917, Urquhart was awarded the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Order, and promoted to the rank of Brigade Major. On 15 August 1913 the 50th Regiment was authorized to augment the 88th Regiment (Victoria Fusiliers) which had been formed on 3 September 1912. The 88th Regiment and the 50th Regiment were placed on active service on 10 August 1914 for local protective duty.
